Newspapers and news websites recently highlighted that Dato' Siti Nurhaliza revealed that her husband had heaped expensive presents on her on her previous birthdays. These had included a RM40,000 bag, a RM200,000 watch, and a RM400,000 Mercedez Benz. The money is his and he can do anything with it – including burning the notes or using them as toilet paper. But why the need for the couple to brag to the Press about those ostentatious birthday gifts?
First, Islam does not advocate squander and waste. Also, think how much benefit these amounts can do for the repair of mosques and suraus, the homeless, orphanages and senior citizens’ homes. I would respect this celebrity couple more if, on Siti's next birthday, her filthy-rich husband announces that to celebrate the occasion, he will donate a sum for the building of a madrasah, sponsor a life-saving operation for a child from a poor family, send medical supplies to Palestine or do some other charity.
